Transformer Water Mist System

Water Spray System is extensively used to protect the Transformers. Such Water Spray system are designed as per NFPA 15. This system comprises of network of piping , Deluge valve, Quartzoid Bulb Detector & UL Listed/Fm Approved Water Spay nozzles. Quartzoid Bulb sprinkler shall burst due to heat which allow water in the detection pipe to drain out and in process allow the Deluge valve to open fully. As the Deluge valve opens, the water shall flow through the piping to throw water into all water spray nozzles, mounted throughout the transformer. The water shall be sprayed in solid conical spray pattern to cover entire area of the plant floor so that the equipment installed shall be kept cool to avoid heat radiation and further ignition of fire.

High Velocity Water Spray System (HVMS)

High Velocity water spray systems use to extinguish fires involving liquids with flash points of 65 Degree Celsius or higher.

Three principles of extinguishment are employed in the system:

emulsification

cooling

smothering

The result of applying these principles is to extinguish the fire within a few seconds. Application of this system is for

Transformers, oil filled equipment of power stations

Turbo-alternators and other

Oil fired boiler rooms, oil quenching tanks

Medium Velocity Water Spray System (MVWS):

Medium velocity water spray systems are installed to control the burning and to provide cooling and/or exposure protection to such risks where extinguishment is always not possible or even desirable, for example, fires involving flammable fluids having flash points below 65°C. These 60°C systems are also used sometimes for power station applications in coal conveyors, cable galleries, etc.

This clause provides guidelines for the protection of the following areas by medium velocity water spray system.

General area protection plants where flammable solvents are stored and/or used

Horizontal storage vessels (for example, LPG bullets, etc)

Vertical storage vessels (for example, benzene, xylene, toluene tankage)

Spherical storage vessels (for example, LPG bullets, spheres, etc)

Spot protection (protection of selective areas/ equipment)

Features

The ability to prevent re-ignition when concentration levels are maintained

Clean agent suitable for protection of high-value assets

Most effective when used with automatic detection to rapidly introduce FM-200 fire extinguishing agent
